290324 Have you ever…had to move a car without a tow strap?
Many years ago, when I was a lot younger than I am now. My friend and I used to drive Corvettes all the time. He had a very nice 427 powered, 67 four speed. Mine was powered by high-horsepower 396 four speed.
Since we drove the living crap out of them, we were constantly finding additional speed equipment that would make them go even faster.
One weekend we needed to do some work on his car since he had just bought a new part for it. Being poor, we were working on it in the driveway. When it started to rain, we had to move it into the garage. But we had no way of doing so.
However, his Dad, a World War 2 veteran came up with a unique solution. As usual, he frequently did some weird things, but they normally always worked out. The solution he came up with had to be one of the strangest ways I’ve ever heard of or even tried to move a car.
He told us to go into the shed and get one eight foot 2×4. Then said to get his pickup truck, an old one I might add, behind Gary’s Corvette. Put the 2 by 4 on the back bumper and on the front bumper of the truck, then push it in.
Both of us laughed at this answer to our problem of moving that car into the garage. However, the three of us were not going to be able to push it uphill into their garage.
Since we didn’t have any other options we tried his idea, and amazingly enough this two by four pushed that car in their slick as a whistle.
Once we changed the parts out, we each got to thinking how much damage that two by four could have done to the Corvette had it slipped off of that bumper. But it didn’t. And we got away with it. It’s not something I ever do again, especially with the Corvette.
But I have done it with our 62 Ford Galaxy convertible[1]. And it worked just fine.
